What started your fitness journey or what encouraged you to become an instructor?
“I started dance classes when I was 4 years old and continued throughout high school while also walking, running, and bike riding. When I moved to the Northshore in the early 70s there were no gyms, so in the 80s when Jazzercise classes started in Folsom, I never missed one! Then gyms started popping up in Covington and we joined. When I moved to Franklinton 20+ years ago, I worked out at the little gym behind Monica’s beauty parlor. There was an exercise class at the Methodist Church, and I became one of the instructors there for a while. Some ladies in town wanted to tap dance, so we started out at a local dance school, but decided to branch out on our own – I became the instructor for the tap classes. Later, when Zumba started to become popular, I became the Zumba Instructor as well. In recent years I have been at B4 instructing the ‘Fit for Life’ class every Wednesday at 10 a.m.”

What started your fitness journey or what encouraged you to become an instructor?
“Years ago, opportunities for group fitness classes were fairly limited, at least in a small town. A workout would usually consist of following a workout video. While those are great, it is nothing like being in a live class. I’ve always enjoyed dance. After attending my first dance fitness class, I was hooked and couldn’t wait to go back! After some time of taking various classes, the opportunity came to lead a class. It has been a wonderful experience to have a part in the fitness journeys of many others over the years.”

What started your fitness journey or what encouraged you to become an instructor?
“My mom was always very physically active, and I think when I was a child, she signed me up for every lesson/camp that was offered. I am grateful to have been given those opportunities and develop my love for dance/sports. I hope to follow the example of my mom, who in her 70s still dances and plays tennis almost every day, and continue to reap the mental and physical benefits of exercise. My preferred exercise is to be a student in group fitness classes. When the teacher can’t be there, I don’t want to miss class so I became a substitute instructor.

attack. I continued my journey after moving away from home to connect to my new community. After my children were born, I felt a renewed energy to commit to a lifetime of health and wellness because I wanted to stay young and vibrant to enjoy life with them.
